This was a personal project sparked by my reflection after reading headlines about an inequitable U.S. economy. After processing many perspectives, it left me with the question: Is it possible to transform an economy based on competition? Especially if it was built with that very intention.
It operates the way it was designed to.

I transformed a professional project to be a personal reflection and process of "the art of losing" amid a global pandemic. I named this piece after the poem One Art by Elizabeth Bishop. The introductory lines of the poem are as follow:
"The art of losing isn't hard to master; so many things seem filled with the intent to be lost that their loss is no disaster."
The poem appears to be only about the loss of commonplace items on its surface. As the poem implies, Bishop's life was full of losses of all sizes. In it, she meditates on the art of losing, building up a small catalog of losses, which includes house keys and a mother's watch, before climaxing in the loss of houses, land, and a loved one.
Collectively, we've dealt with a magnitude of loss and grief. We've each have had to cope in our way. And, to some degree, figure ourselves out a bit in the process. I made light of the "art" of loss with this piece and found beauty in it.

The mass optimism of 2020 took a drastic shift. It also illuminated the inequities that were very much covert. Even before 2020, the disruption of Trump fostered the continued legacy of trauma to many structurally marginalized. This graphic is intended to capture the tone of how Trump’s being is white supremacy in action.
The key visual is comprised of mixed media (the typography and visual narrative).

This was a poster I developed thinking back about the impact and persistence of of structural violence under the project of white supremacy and a capitalist economy. This featured an example, Flint, Michigan. In this instance, people’s well-being (or lack thereof) depended on the presence of big companies like Ford and a government that lacked accountability for producing death.

A collection of imagery that captures movements from history and the present day. Particularly movements that actively reimagined and emancipated from existing structures tied to the white supremacy project, such as capitalism. It's about people who lay the foundation for modern-day organizing to access a life that is met with collective care and full dignity. More people will embrace a turn against capitalist social relations as the economy continues to deteriorate, offering few alternatives. This piece is to celebrate that the next revolution is already underway.

Rupa Mayra, M.D created this chart. I modified it with byproducts conceptualized by Ericka Hart, M.A. This chart captures what structures work together to produce centuries of trauma.

Tapped into old school sketch style. When pondering about the concept of a “think” tank, I gathered it was a hub for a collective of people to come together and compose generations of ideas. I reminisced with popular culture, particularly films such as Good Will Hunting and A Beautiful Place, that these ideas would be explored on a chalkboard.

This was a commissioned project that I sought out to participate in. It was a case study of collective care through applications of a solidarity economy. Imagine what it would look like where people’s needs are met and life is filled with an abundance.
Social media, especially Twitter, has provided real-time and raw updates of loss, exploitation, and how to dismantle and uprise. It has been a weapon and tool to reach the masses. However, what we do offline will shape and impact many and our collective liberation.

A practice session inspired by paper art. I enjoy looking at visual imagery I feel like I can touch. I chose to illustrate the backend of a clock because that’s what drives day-to-day. While we don’t always control our own time in the grand scheme of things, we can be patient with ourselves and reset or pause if we have to.

The Black Vision Conference, was designed to be a conference that celebrated Black Queer folks as they exist today. The theme of the conference was Afro-futurism, thinking of what Blackness is today and in the future. I also wanted to pay tribute to the Black Queer folks who were ahead of their time. These are a couple of illustrations that I used for the marketing materials for the conference.

In this process I was able to tour the stores to grasp the brand identity. It’s very kawaii, which is the culture of cuteness in Japan. When releasing a survey I decided to venture into social media, specifically Instagram. I created a graphic that reflected the brand and popular culture to grab attention. We were also able to whip up some Theodore the Pom macarons! I produced the illustration and the H&B team brought it to life.

This was a self-initiated art project. It combines mixed media. The illustration and polygon line work of the hand was done individually. The use of low poly art comes from the early days of 3D animation. I also utilized cinema 4D to render the low poly rabbit.
